Wind Power Generator: The Past, Present, and Future
from: Beverly SaltonstallUsing wind as a force to complete a task is not at all a new concept. Back in the earlier centuries, for instance, wind mill was used to pump water into households and ranches. In the 1920’s, another wind potential was utilized when Marcellus Jacobs designed the first electricity-generating wind turbine. But the wind’s potential to create energy did not receive the attention it deserved until environmental and energy crises caused governments to tap this as a possible source of electricity.
Since then, several researches and studies were launched to look into the methods of improving its manufacture, design, and mechanical functions. Problems such as killing birds that fly into the blades, siting, and poorly manufactured blades were successfully solved. Presently, wind power generator is steadily creeping into the picture, giving households an alternative to the power grid. Its major advantage lies in its ability to provide free electricity through the conversion of kinetic energy. By using wind, which is a renewable source of energy, electric expenses can be reduced by 80%.
Like other renewable sources of energy, wind does not contribute to greenhouse gas emissions and pollution. This is the opposite of coal and natural gas, the primary sources of energy today, which can produce one to two pounds of carbon emission per kilowatt-hour. So if wind power is used in place of these traditional energy sources, there is a great possibility of eliminating the widespread environmental problems.
The availability of wind power generator has improved a lot in recent years. The price issue that kept people from having their wind power generator was cleverly addressed by the emergence of DIY wind power generator projects. Today, materials are readily available and easy-to-follow instructions are made accessible for the use of average households. These kinds of improvement consequently multiplied the number of wind power generator owners.
The use of wind power generator is expected to improve in the coming years, especially now that the economy is being shaken and the environment is laid out with threats. And although there is still a considerable portion of the population that remains doubtful, patterns of thoughts will eventually head to the opposite direction. The same is expected in other parts of the world. The countries that have never considered the power of the wind will hopefully follow the examples of Denmark, the world’s leader in wind energy, Spain, Portugal, the United States, and a few others.

Wind turbines function best in wide-open spaces where they can capture airflow unobstructed by buildings or mountains. Unfortunately, these same conditions are also optimal for aircraft takeoffs and landings, creating tension between wind energy utilities and airports in a number of locations worldwide. Utility-scale wind turbines, many of which stand more than 100 meters tall, can interfere ...
