When it comes to sustainability, food production is a leading topic of conversation among the experts. On one hand it is suggested that we limit the importation of food goods in an effort to reduce the environmental impact and carbon footprint generated by transporting products over long distances. On the other hand reducing the amount of goods we import has a significant impact on the economies of developing nations. This debate will go on worldwide for years to come.
We alone aren’t going to solve the problem but there are sure things we could do at home. Take the fishing industry for example. It is quite easy to download a free Seafood Watch Card, and check it every time you order fish. Avoid fish that are on the non-recommended list for your area. This is the simplest way to help the sustainability issue.
Want to go a step farther?? We all should become advocates for the environment and an easy way to do this is when you go to a restaurant that serves fish that are on the non-recommended list ask to speak to the chef or the owner and politely ask them to take that fish off their menu, explain to them why and give them a copy of the Seafood Watch Card you downloaded from the Internet.
If 1000 people did that at a different restaurant, that would make a huge difference wouldn’t it?
Every small step we take helps the environment in big ways.
