With garbage, it has always been an “out of site, out of mind, mentality.  Once our garbage has been sent to the landfills we tend to stop thinking about the problem.   One thing that most people don’t consider is that garbage that has been buried, can rear it’s ugly head again.

Take the tiny island nation of Haiti for example.  This island has  vast areas of deforestation and hurricane damage,  and one cannot assume that the garbage they have buried long ago is going to stay buried.

Haiti has suffered a considerable loss of life and property due to the numerous storms that have hit the area. Recently, there has been a steep increase in the number of tropical storms that have hit this tiny tropical island as evidenced by the records of storms that have been kept for the last 150 years or so.

Haiti is now facing  a new problem due to their erosion problems.  Garbage and other things that have been considered buried for good are now resurfacing.  Trash and toxic chemicals from decades ago is coming to the the surface of the land and causing major pollution concerns.  Toxic chemicals that have been long ago banned are now reappearing on the surface and escaping into the atmosphere of this tiny tropical island.

The goal of sustainable development is to prevent deforestation and replanting tree in an effort to protect Haiti from future storms. This in turn will help prevent the erosion problems and subsequent uncovering of age old toxic waste.
